Today, I am thankful for the extra hour of sleep that will magically occur at 2 A.M. tomorrow morning. It's the little things. :)
This is also your friendly reminder to "Fall Back" and set all those pesky clocks back one hour. Thank goodness cell phones take care of the time change by themselves, right?
Here are some fun facts about Daylight Saving Time...
It wasn't Ben's idea. Though Benjamin Franklin is known for saying "early to bed, early to rise," he shouldn't be known for Daylight Saving Time. It was actually the idea of a fellow named William Willett...
From England to Germany. Englishman Willett published a brochure on "The Waste of Daylight" back in 1907. He tirelessly proposed his idea to Parliament, but they were never convinced enough to put it into legislation. Germany, however, thought it to be a swell solution for conserving electricity while WWI was on. They became the first country to adopt Daylight Saving Time (DST).
Big candy has big influence. Fast forward to 2007 in the United States. After some intense lobbying (and allegedly bribing senators with sweets), the candy industry gets DST moved to November, so as not to interfere with Halloween profits.
We've been saying it wrong all along. I don't know about you, but the only way I've ever heard and said it is daylight savings time. Interestingly enough, "saving" is singular and acts as an adjective in the phrase. Who knew?
Enjoy that extra sleep!
'Til next time,
Eva
